- Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma face New Zealand in the maiden World Test Championship Final.
- The Bollywood diva has reacted to smears levelled at her by former head selector. She said she will not allow anyone to use her name to stir up controversy.
Virat Kohli, the captain of Team India, and Anushka Sharma, a Bollywood actress, were arguably one of India’s most powerful couples. India is presently in the United Kingdom, where Kohli and Anushka are preparing to face New Zealand in the maiden World Test Championship Final, which begins on Friday in Southampton (June 18).
The last time the pair, popularly known as ‘Virushka,’ visited the United Kingdom was in 2019 when India competed in the 50-over World Cup. When former wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer claimed that a selector had offered her tea during the competition, Anushka’s name was dragged into a dispute.
The Bollywood star has already reacted to all of the smears levelled at her and stated her position on the matter. Recalling earlier scandals in which Anushka was blamed for Kohli’s poor form in 2014, she stated that she will not let anyone to use her name to stir up controversy.
Anushka Sharma statement on tea controversy with former cricketer
“The most recent iteration of these malicious falsehoods claims that selectors offered me tea during the World Cup! I went to one World Cup game and sat in the family box rather than the selectors box as claimed, but when it comes to convenience, who cares about the truth?
“If you have anything to say about the selection committee and their qualifications, say it, but don’t bring me into it to back up your claim or sensationalise your viewpoint. Anushka’s statement said, “I refuse to allow anybody to use my name in such discourse.”
MSK Prasad had to deal with these challenges on a daily basis throughout his term as head selector. During his time as the Indian cricket team’s head selector, he has responded to controversies. Prasad was chastised not just for his player selections, but also for having Anushka Sharma, the wife of Team India captain Virat Kohli, present throughout the ODI World Cup matches.
Prasad said in a recent interview with a cricket website that the selectors were unduly drawn into the issue of coffee service.
“When Team India beat Australia in a Test series at home in the absence of great players, no one hailed the selections. To us, it makes no difference. Because our efforts were acknowledged and respected by the team’s management. This is something we can live with. Regardless of what others say, the team members are aware of the job we’ve done. Bharat Arun, Team India’s bowling coach, and Paras Mhambrey are fully aware of this,” Prasad stated.
